In The War Between, the American Civil War is reduced to its most basic element: two human beings breathing the same dust. The vast, indifferent Arizona desert acts as a great equalizer, bleaching the blue and gray out of their coats until they are both simply “man vs. nature.” As their canteens run dry and the horizon shimmers with heat-induced mirages, the ideological divide that fueled a nation’s bloodiest conflict becomes a luxury they can no longer afford. Every step forward is a negotiation, and every night spent huddled against the desert chill is a reminder that the only thing more dangerous than their enemy is the silence of the wilderness.
