Bride of the Year (2026)
Story & Overview
Bride of the Year (2026)—originally titled Bruid van die Jaar—is a visceral and “head-spinning” South African romantic comedy that explores the “dark realities” of public humiliation and the “spiritual cost of power” within the competitive wedding industry. The narrative follows Lienkie (Carine Rous), whose childhood dream of building a perfect family and winning the prestigious “Bride of the Year” competition comes crashing down on her wedding day. After discovering her fiancé, Xander (Armand Aucamp), cheating with one of her bridesmaids, Lienkie refuses to let her “burning ambition” fade. She hatches a devious, “stark and severe” counter-plan to manipulate the rules of the contest, orchestrate a fake relationship, and get ultimate revenge on her ex. It stands as a study of “resilience and status,” where the “extraordinary beauty” of love is repurposed into a “not nice” weapon of social warfare.
